Questions You Might Have

Choosing the right curtains or blinds can bring up more questions than expected.

Here are some of the things homeowners ask us most — from choosing the right fit to measurement, installation and looking after your window furnishings afterwards.

1. Choosing the Right Fit & General Questions

We provide made-to-measure window furnishings for Singapore homes, including Curtains, Roller Blinds, Korean Blinds, Venetian Blinds, ZipScreen and Outdoor Blinds.

Each works a little differently, so the right choice depends on where it’s going, how much light and privacy you need, and how you use the room.

Think about the room before thinking about the product.

Curtains give a space a softer, fuller finish and can be layered for different levels of light and privacy. Blinds generally take up less space and offer a cleaner, more compact way to control a window.

For some Singapore homes, the best answer may even be a combination of both.

We’ll help you look at how much sunlight the room receives, the privacy you need, the available space and how you actually use the room.

Roller Blinds, Korean Blinds and Venetian Blinds can all work well in HDB and condo interiors. The better choice depends on the room and what you need from the window.

For example, Blackout Roller Blinds may suit a bedroom where reducing light is important, while Sunscreen Roller Blinds can help manage glare in a bright living room without completely shutting out daylight.

For balconies and exterior spaces, ZipScreen or Outdoor Blinds may be more suitable, subject to the opening and property requirements.

Roller Blinds use a flat sheet of fabric that rolls neatly around a tube, giving the window a simple and streamlined appearance.

Korean Blinds use layered fabric that gathers into softer folds when raised, giving the room a gentler, more fabric-led look.

If you prefer something clean and minimal, consider Roller Blinds. If you’d like something softer without the fullness of curtains, Korean Blinds may be a better fit.

The main difference is how the fabric is guided at the sides.

ZipScreen uses a side-track system that keeps the fabric guided along the opening. Outdoor Blinds use a simpler cable side-guide system and are primarily suited to providing shade, reducing glare and adding privacy.

Which one is right for your balcony, patio or outdoor area depends on the opening, exposure and what you want the system to do.

Start with how dark you want the room to be.

Blackout Curtains or Blackout Roller Blinds are worth considering when reducing incoming light is the priority.

Blackout Korean Blinds can also significantly reduce light while giving the window a softer appearance, although they should not be treated as a completely light-sealed solution.

If you want to reduce glare while keeping some natural daylight and your outward view, Sunscreen Roller Blinds are one option to consider.

Venetian Blinds offer another approach because the slats can be tilted to redirect incoming light while maintaining some privacy.

The direction of your windows matters too. We’ll look at how the sun actually enters your room rather than recommend something based on appearance alone.

Material choice becomes especially important in areas exposed to moisture and Singapore’s humidity.

For Venetian Blinds, PVC faux-wood generally handles moisture better than natural wood, making it the more practical choice for humid areas.

For fabric blinds, suitability depends on the specific material and where it will be installed. Tell us about the room first and we’ll help you choose accordingly.

Absolutely.

A home doesn’t need one window furnishing repeated everywhere.

You might choose Curtains for the living room, Blackout Roller Blinds for a bedroom and Venetian Blinds for a study. What matters is that each choice works for the room it’s actually going into.

We’d rather help you find the right fit for each window than sell you the same answer for all of them.

2. Measurement, Quotation, Ordering & Installation

It starts with a conversation.

Tell us what you’re looking for and, if possible, send us a few photos of your windows or space. We’ll discuss the options that may suit your home before arranging measurement and confirming the specifications.

Once everything is agreed and your order is confirmed, your curtains or blinds are made to measure. We’ll then arrange a suitable installation date and fit them properly in your home.

No need to know all the answers before contacting us. That’s what the first conversation is for.

We arrange an on-site measurement so that your final quotation is based on the actual window dimensions, product choice and installation requirements.

This also gives us a chance to look at details that may not be obvious from a photo — such as mounting space, window handles, surrounding walls or the size of an outdoor opening.

Yes. Send us a photo of your window or opening together with the approximate width and height, and we can first discuss the suitable options with you.

Any initial estimate is subject to final site measurement, product selection and installation requirements.

Yes. Our curtains and blinds are made according to the measurements of your windows or openings rather than supplied in standard off-the-shelf sizes.

A proper fit matters. It’s not only about how the finished window looks, but also how well the product operates day to day.

Seeing a material in person can be helpful because colour, texture and the amount of light passing through a fabric may look different from what you see on a screen. Samples can be viewed during your site measurement or when you visit our showroom.

Yes. Cornerstone 317 provides window furnishings for HDB flats, condominiums and landed homes in Singapore.

The installation method and suitable product may differ depending on the window, opening and site conditions.

It depends on the property and the proposed installation.

For condominiums, exterior installations may be subject to your MCST’s renovation or façade guidelines. For HDB properties, applicable requirements can depend on where and how the system will be installed.

We recommend checking the relevant requirements before confirming an exterior installation rather than assuming that the same rules apply to every property.

Possibly, but we’ll need to look at the actual dimensions and site conditions first.

Every blind system has practical size limits. For a particularly wide, tall or unusual opening, we’ll assess what works properly rather than recommend a system simply because it can technically be fitted.

Curved layouts may be possible using an appropriate manual curtain track, subject to the actual shape and site conditions.

We’ll assess the space during measurement before confirming the track arrangement.

Motorisation is available for selected window furnishing systems.

For Curtains, motorisation is suitable for straight-track installations. Motorised options are also available for selected blinds and outdoor systems, including ZipScreen and Outdoor Blinds.

The right setup depends on the product, dimensions, access and electrical requirements.

As a general guide, our standard fabrication lead times are:

  • Interior manual systems: approximately 1–2 weeks
  • Interior motorised systems: approximately 2–3 weeks
  • Exterior systems: approximately 3–4 weeks

These are typical fabrication times outside of peak periods and may vary depending on the product and specifications.

Once your order is ready, installation will be arranged according to our available schedule. We’ll keep you informed along the way, so you’ll know what to expect before your installation date.

For standard supply and installation orders, a 50% deposit is required upon confirmation, with the remaining 50% balance payable upon installation.

For project orders, payment terms may vary depending on the scope and arrangement. Please check with our office for the applicable payment terms.

For servicing works, full payment is required.

3. Maintenance & After-Sales

For Day and Night Curtains, machine washing is suitable. We recommend hang drying instead of spin drying to help maintain the fabric and extend the lifespan of your curtains.

For Blackout Curtains, we recommend dry cleaning instead. Machine washing may damage the foam backing or blackout laminated layer, depending on the fabric construction.

When in doubt, check with us before washing — we’d rather help you care for the fabric properly than risk damaging it.

Indoor blinds are generally straightforward to maintain.

For regular cleaning, use a feather duster, slightly damp cloth or a vacuum on low suction to gently remove dust from the fabric or surface.

If you use a damp cloth, allow the blind to dry completely before rolling it up. This helps prevent moisture from being trapped when the fabric is rolled.

The blind mechanism and accessible components can also be gently cleaned with a wet wipe.

For most HDB and condo installations, cleaning the exterior-facing side of a ZipScreen may not be safely accessible. Do not attempt to reach outside your balcony or window to clean it.

Where both sides can be safely accessed — such as some landed home installations — you can remove everyday dust with a feather duster, slightly damp cloth or vacuum on low suction. A gentle water spray can also be used.

For bird droppings or more stubborn stains, use a mild detergent and clean the affected area gently.

After using water or a damp cloth, allow the fabric to dry completely before rolling the ZipScreen up.

If part of the screen cannot be reached safely, leave it rather than attempting to clean it from an unsafe position.

Roller Blinds are generally one of the simpler choices to maintain because of their flat fabric surface.

Venetian Blinds need a little more attention between individual slats, while Curtains and Korean Blinds should be cared for according to their fabric.

If easy maintenance matters to you, tell us when you’re choosing. It’s one of the practical things worth considering alongside colour and appearance.
